That early morning nip in the air means fall is just around the corner, which means, more importantly, that it's scarecrow time in Granby. The Granby Chamber of Commerce will host its 3rd Annual Ocktober Fest Scarecrow Contest this month. Completed entries are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 15 but displays can be put up now and left out through Halloween.
Scarecrows must be at least 4 feet and no more than 7 feet tall. They should include traditional materials such as clothing, straw and rope and should not incorporate plastic or rubber masks, electrical, mechanical or audio components but may include wind driven features.
Since this is a community event, the Chamber discourages themes that are political, religious or excessively violent. Scarecrows may reflect the nature of a business but advertising signage is not permitted.
Prepare the scarecrows to withstand the elements, from wind and rain to snow. All construction should be sturdy and ornaments should be securely attached. Carved pumpkins and other living materials that will not last are also discouraged. Scarecrows may be taken indoors at night but should remain on display during business hours.
Scarecrows can be located anywhere in the Town of Granby but must be officially entered to be included in the judging. Entry is free.
Entry forms are available from the Granby Chamber of Commerce at 365 E. Agate, Maverick's Grille at 15 E. Agate and Sky-Hi News at 424 E. Agate.
The contest is open to individuals, businesses and organizations. Prizes will be awarded for most humorous, most traditional, most appropriate to Grand County. The people's choice award will be chosen by public ballot from Sept. 15–23.
Winners will be announced during Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 25.
