Have you seen the 1999 movie “Bowfinger” with actors Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy?

When Murphy's main character in the movie loses his composure, he quickly chants
“Keep it together, keepittogether, keepittogether,” (real fast like that) and it seemed to help.

Well, as the spring sunshine heats everything up around us, festivities and news items are sprouting up everywhere. The burst of activity leaves me with that pressed sense that I need to put an extra spring in my step just to keep up.

There are several rumors in the local mill spilling out into the streets and I'm trying my darndest to confirm the information - I'd sure appreciate it if anyone could share what they know.

I heard the new owners of the Riverside Hotel and Restaurant in Hot Sulphur Springs have already opened for lunch and dinner. I spoke with one of the new owners, Richard Paradise, who confirmed he and his wife, Julie, (the other owner) had been offering dinner on the weekends, but that my timing was both good and bad.

Apparently, this past weekend was the last time they would be serving meals for about a month while the couple has the kitchen renovated. He said their goal is to reopen in May with at least lunch service and a menu that will be a little upscale, but still relatively simple. Look for a feature on the place in April.

I also heard the owner of The Depot (formerly the County Seat Cafe) is in the process of selling the restaurant and pub. The deal is currently under contract, for the building as well, with a closing scheduled for the first week of April. Look for a feature on the new, local owners in May for the grand opening celebrations. In the meantime, the restaurant remains open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Then there's the Sportsman's Cafe (or Grill), located across the street from The Depot. It apparently is under new ownership and open as well.

Meanwhile, excitement has filled the air in Granby as friends and co-workers talk about the new Java Lava Cafe & Coffee Lounge, which officially opened Monday. A couple of the most-talked-about amenities are the space and ambiance, what one friend explained as not French bistro but urban bistro. The cafe also features quiet places to meet with people or surf the Internet, and comfortable seating.

The menu is quite elaborate with breakfast items, wraps and sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch, desserts (including cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory, pies and fresh-baked cookies), and, of course, coffee. The cafe carries four different flavors of coffee each day, with a European variety from a Scottish roaster. The house coffee is a Guatemalan blend, and the lounge also offers the specialty espresso drinks that have almost become an American staple.

As the recent goings on in the west end of the county are still being ironed out, I had a chance to stop by the Wild Creek Brewery at Untamed Southwest Grill in Winter Park last week to see what the business is brewing up over there. I grabbed photos of a couple more gentlemen participating in the March mustache madness there (see this edition's Out & About page) and got a chance to speak with Steven Schott (whose picture was featured last Friday).

As the brewmaster there, Schott is excited to announce the newest brew - the “Drunken Irishman,” an Irish pale ale with 7.5 percent alcohol content that Untamed is offering this month. He said it's a “hop-lover's delight,” with an intense, dry-hop nose (from copious amounts of Amarillo hops from the Pacific Northwest) and rich malt body balanced for a dry finish.

Other upcoming items for the Fraser Valley include a new restaurant at Silverado II, and the sushi place in Winter Park is moving to where Lost Boys Burgers is (Freestyles sports bar will remain on the lower level).

Food for thought: “The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.” - Albert Einstein.
