Advocates fundraiser: Taste of Spring

    The selfless efforts of volunteers and staff with Advocates’ Victim Assistance Team have helped many in Grand County. On Sunday night, residents and visitors are invited out for the nonprofit’s 16th Annual Taste of Spring to show their support of the cause.

    The annual Taste of Spring was created in the early ‘90s by the Advocates staff and board of directors as a way to raise funds to meet victim needs and expand support services for them. Spring was chosen as a perfect time for the benefit, the organization’s largest fundraiser, because it celebrates new beginnings and change in the community. This year’s event includes live musical entertainment, silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, as well as a wine and beer tasting.

    Live music is being provided by a long list of local talents, including “walking jukebox” Americana guitarist and singer Gary Key, Washboard Annie, Matt Holliday and Chris Williamson (of band One Time fame), Steve Cormey, and band Juicebox.
Silent auction items include a Glenwood Springs Getaway from Amtrak, Hotel Colorado and Winter Park Travel; 2008-2009 Winter Park ski passes, portable Sony DVD player, an iPod shuffle, artwork by local artists Karen Vance, Elizabeth Kurtak, Howard Neville, Fran Cassidy, Cindy Bergeson, Carol Kitts, Janie Radcliffe (and more), and gift certificates for things like massage services, meals at area restaurants, and outdoor adventures.

    Temptations in the food department include grilled chicken skewers with a peanut sauce, spanakopita, tenderloin sandwiches, smoked salmon, pasta, fruit, and assorted desserts and chocolates.

    Beer purveyors include Wild Creek Brewery, Grand Lake Brewing Co., Boulder Beer Co., O’Dell Brewing Co., Budweiser standard sales, and B&K Distributing. The variety of wines will be provided by Winter Park Winery, National Distributing Co., Platinum Beverage, Inc. and Beverage Distributing.

    “We are eager to make it the best event yet, and with your support we are confident we will do so,” said Marissa Hope Lorenz, Advocates’ outreach and education coordinator.

    Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door and may be purchased at the local chambers of commerce, Grand Mountain Bank, R&J Liquors and Bottle Pass Liquors.
All proceeds collected will go to Advocates Victim Assistance Team to help in its mission to end domestic violence in Grand County. Services include, but are not limited to, a 24-hour crisis line, temporary safe housing, emergency cell phones, counseling, referral services to other agencies, and education.

    Advocates Victim Assistance Team responds, on average, to 345 calls each year related to domestic violence issues. Almost 95 percent of the calls involve Grand County residents, 65 percent involve physical abuse. According to Lorenz, “if national statistics hold true, $1.7 million is lost in productivity and medical costs in the Grand County community annually” because of domestic violence-related issues.
Funds raised at the event, through the silent auction, ticket sales and table sponsorships will be used for victim services, community outreach and prevention education in the local schools.
