As Jim Morrison said, “The time to hesitate is through.”
With summer fun just around the corner, careful planning seems to be the ticket to ensure the best Grand County entertainment has to offer.
Tickets go on sale April 1 for the Grand County Blues Society’s Blues from the Top VI event hosted at Hideaway Park in Winter Park. Those interested are advised to not mess around and to act now if they want to catch the incredible two-day line-up of live musicians.
The festival kicks off Saturday, June 28, with Johnny Winter, Jimmy Thackery, Bob Margolin, The Delta Sonics, Eden Brent, John-Alex Mason, Soulmate, and the GCBS’s Blues from the School band The Runaways. Sunday’s line-up highlights Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Hall, Tommy Shannon and George Rains; Ronnie Fruge, Deanna Bogart, Larry Garner, Jason Ricci, and Zak Harmon.
Tickets are $20 per day through April, $28 for advanced tickets, and $32 per day the day of the festival. They are available at Radio Shack, Tickets West, The Paper Clip, Winter Park Visitor Center, and on the GCBS’s Web site: www.grandblues.org. Sponsors include the Sky-Hi Daily News, Beaver Village Condominiums, Town of Winter Park, and Blueswax and Blues Revue.
Now is the time to spring into action for those businesses and individuals hoping for their chance to win a custom-built gaming table made by Ghostwood Interiors of Kremmling. The table includes a copper center, protective cover, additional storage, and was made from reclaimed wood from the Hermosa Dairy Barn in Parshall.
Tickets are $10 each or buy six chances for $50. Those not registered for the Kremmling Chamber of Commerce’s 29th Annual Banquet March 29 may purchase raffle tickets up to the evening of the banquet. Those already registered to attend the banquet may also buy raffle tickets during the evening event. Raffle ticket sales will benefit the Kremmling Visitor Center Building Fund.
In between those perfect nights filled to the brim with musical and theatrical enlightenment, I might suggest checking out the film scene. Upcoming features hitting the summer movie release sooner than later which look intriguing include “The Grand” with Woody Harrelson and directed by “X-Men” writer Zak Penn and “Love Guru” with Mike Meyers. There’s also “Shutter” for horror fans.
Movies to come out on video/DVD this month worth the rental include “Enchanted,” “Kite Runner,” “The Brave One” (with Jodie Foster) “Atonement” (which had six Oscar nominees), “Sweeney Todd” and “I Am Legend.” I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re already available for check-out at the Grand County Libraries, whose collection seems to include quite a few new releases on a regular and pleasantly surprising basis. There’s the Silver Screen Cinema and Grand Theatre Company in Winter Park (the theatre company’s last two performances of its winter season are tonight and Saturday night), Moose Stop Video in Grand Lake, a quick-movie rental station at City Market, and one-time play DVDs at 7-Eleven.
The DVD of “I Am Legend,” which features Will Smith, offers viewers an alternate ending, which is becoming quite popular in the DVD world. Other classics available on DVD with alternate endings include “Fatal Attraction,” “1408,” “Titanic,” “Bourne Identity,” “Army of Darkness,” and “Little Miss Sunshine” offers three alternative endings.
If you are chilling at your pad or just stuck home with the local crud that’s making its rounds, you may want to check out a new show I’ve discovered, “Later ... With Jools Holland.” The show format usually highlights four to five live bands for one, two or three songs, and Holland will sit down at a piano with some of the big names for a special feature song.
Food for thought: “To the timid and hesitating everything is impossible because it seems so.” - Sir Walter Scott.
