A fairly large group of us went out to enjoy the last-blast performance of the James Taylor and Carole King tribute play at the Grand Theatre Company Friday night.

I swear I felt the earth move, under my feet, and several members of my party were touched so greatly by the performance of company co-owner Kimberlee Nanda (as King) and local musician Yaniv Salzberg (as Taylor) that they were reduced to tears that were almost uncontrollable.

They also wanted to know how they could get involved. Nanda said auditions are always encouraged, by appointment. Just call the box office at (970) 726-5048.

I can’t wait for the performances Kimberlee and Tanny have planned next. Thankfully, the talented duo already has their summer schedule in the works. The Grand Theatre Company will be opening a “Mud Season Show” April 18 with “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” by Jane Wagner.

The play, a one-woman show that will run for five performances only, focuses on a bag lady who offers her services to help extra terrestrial beings understand what they are seeing on this planet. As I expected, Kimberlee will also be starring in this one, as the lead.

One of the guys in my party last Friday asked who the lady with the incredible pipes was up on stage and it was her. I suspect this show will be another great
performance for the local singer/actor.

Then, this summer, the Grand Theatre Company plans to put on an “experimental show,” called “Murder at Howard Johnson’s.” The company’s larger musical will be “Lucky Stiff” and the children’s show will be “How I Became a Pirate.”

Also, don’t forget, tickets are already on sale for Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre’s upcoming season in Grand Lake. RMRT presents “Oklahoma!,” “Urinetown,” “Big, the Musical,” and the fall production “Why Do Fools Fall in Love.” RMRT’s box office number is (970) 627-3421.

Meanwhile, on the silver screen side of the stage, Stephanie Ralph, who works for the Grand County Libraries in Granby has been trying to order several movies that feature scenes of Grand County. In the wake of the success of the re-showing of the 1950 film “On Dangerous Ground” in February, local history guru Don Dailey told me about four other movies filmed here and I passed the information along.

They are: “The White Dessert,” which Dailey thinks was filmed in the mid-1920s and features Rollins Pass, “Under Siege, Dark Territory” with Steven Seagal, “Switchback” with Danny Glover, and a 1990 movie “On Top of the World.” Neither Ralph nor I can find any information on the latter feature, but Dailey said local Mary Baumberger helped the crew find the spot of a local plane crash, which is the feature of the film. (I’ve got a call out to her, but I’m still waiting for her to call back to confirm the rumor).

Ralph has confirmed she’s tracked down two of the four movies (”Under Siege” and “Switchback”) and they are expected to be added to the local library shelf by the end of April. Anyone else who may know more about the other two, or of a movie with portions filmed here in Grand County, are encouraged to let us know so we can get them on the library shelves. Ralph also opened my eyes to a Web site that lists movies filmed in Colorado — www.infernofilm.com/onlocation.

Movie rental of the week (at the library): The 2006 drama “The Namesake,” directed by Mira Nair and based on the book by Jhumpa Lahiri. Kal Penn (Kumar in “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”) plays American-born Gogol, son of Indian immigrants who wants to fit in among his fellow New Yorkers, despite his family's unwillingness to let go of their traditions. The movie made me laugh and cry, my two prerequisites for a thumbs-up rating.

New product of the week: Cherry-flavored M&M’s®.

Food for thought: “For the stage displays the first vigorous expression, as the natural thing and without conspicuous restraint, of private individuality.” - British poet Lascelles Abercrombie. “If the gig's going really well, I'm incredibly happy on stage and really feel good about my life and things.” - James Taylor.
