You can do something to help both the environment and local recreation by volunteering for the Camp Chief Ouray/Nordic Center Cleanup Day on Saturday at Snow Mountain Ranch-YMCA of the Rockies.
Based upon the National Public Lands Day concept, the cleanup day will have volunteers working to clean up its trail system in areas that have undergone extensive logging in recent months. The logging was part of YMCA’s mitigation work to remove the thousands of trees killed in the ongoing pine beetle epidemic.
In addition, the volunteers will construct fences to line the trails. This is important to help keep foot, bike and ski traffic off logged areas so that they can begin to recover through natural growth and the YMCA’s planned reforesting project.
“This Saturday, we’ll be focusing on slash pickup on and around the trails between the Nordic Center and Indian Peaks Lodge,” said Marty Ferguson, Camp Chief Ouray’s director. “We also plan to construct buck fences in that area. If we have enough volunteers, we might be able to construct a new fire ring adjacent to the Legett Youth and Family Pavilion.”
In addition to helping the land recover from the pine beetle epidemic, the cleanup and maintenance work by the volunteers is expected to help improve the YMCA’s extensive Nordic ski trails. Its trail system is nationally famous as having some of North America’s best cross-country ski trails.
Ferguson said that about 100 volunteers have already signed up to work on the project this Saturday, but more are still needed.
“We’ve got Chief Camp Ouray alumni who have volunteered,” he said. “Also 15 cross-country skiers and their coach from one of the local schools have volunteered as well as some other Nordic skiers. Come on out and join us Saturday because it’s going to be a great way to meet other people who also enjoy using the YMCA’s facilities.”
This Saturday’s cleanup work will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free breakfasts and lunches will be served.
To conclude Saturday’s activities, Ferguson said a campfire event will be held at 7 p.m. to “celebrate the day’s hard work and to honor of Mothers Day.”
Volunteers of all ages are still being signed up for Saturday’s project.
“We’re welcoming ages 5 and up,” Ferguson said. “We’ll also have some kid-friendly work sites during the event. We’ve had groups call us already wanting to do a service project and we welcome them.”
Participants are asked to dress appropriately for this outdoor event including “mud boots.” They should also bring work gloves, garden rakes and shovels if they have them. The YMCA will be providing the saws and other gear.
Those wanting to volunteer for the Camp Chief Ouray/Nordic Center Cleanup Day can contact Ferguson at mferguson@ymcarockies.org or call 887-2648.
