East Grand School District’s third-graders made a remarkable improvement in their reading scores in the latest statewide test scores.

At Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Robb Rankin reported that 82 percent of the district’s third grade class scored “at or above proficiency” in reading on the CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) tests taken earlier this year.

This 82-percent score was a dramatic improvement over those for last year’s third graders who scored a 66-percent proficiency. The 2007 results were the lowest CSAP reading scores for the district’s third grade class in the 11-year history of the statewide tests.

“I’m pleased with these results because they have reversed a trend,” Rankin said. “Our third-grade scores have been in decline since 2004.”

In 2004, East Grand third graders earned an all-time high score of 88 percent “at or above proficiency.” Then in 2005, the class’s score slid to 80 percent, followed by a further fall in 2006 to 75 percent. The third graders’ score bottomed out at 66 percent last year.

Rankin credited the dramatic turnaround in third grade reading scores to the hard work of the school district staff, saying they had “really paid attention” to the declining scores and worked to reverse them with “quality instruction.”

The improvement in reading scores were most pronounced at Granby Elementary and Fraser Valley Elementary. At the Granby school, reading scores jumped 17 percent in one year’s time from 59 percent “at or above proficiency” in 2007 to 74 percent this year. At Fraser Valley Elementary, its third graders improved their scores from 67 percent last year to 91 percent in 2008.

Grand Lake Elementary saw a slight dip in its results. This year, its third graders scored 82 percent proficiency compared to 83 percent last year.

At the school’s district fourth elementary school, Indian Peaks Charter School, its third graders maintained their 100 percent proficiency in reading from last year to 2008.
This year’s third grade class has two students.

Another highlight of this year’s CSAP reading results was that the third grade boys actually scored higher (84-percent proficiency) than the girls (80 percent proficiency). Rankin jokingly remarked this was “the first time in recorded history that the boys outperformed the girls in reading.”
