Kremmling fires up cliffs, concert series

Print Comment
Among several top spots to see the fireworks tonight is in the town of Kremmling, a local favorite for its 10th Annual Fire Up the Cliffs celebration. The event takes place thanks to the Kremmling Volunteer Fire Department.

The night begins at 6 p.m. with the Fireman’s Annual BBQ (chicken, sides, lemonade and ice tea) to benefit the department. The Kremmling Area Chamber of Commerce will keep things cool with a beverage stand and dessert feast (which benefits the chamber).

People and families are welcome to spread out on picnic blankets and enjoy the sounds of Kremmling’s own Mike Music and his Friends (Mickey and Trish Sandora of 3rd Time Lucky) in concert 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mike Music is known for his great country music with a Southern rock flavor.

“It’s nice to play at home,” Music said.

Live entertainment sponsors include Grand Mountain Bank, EZ Insurance Solutions, West Grand Land Company and Mike Music, Cliffside Inn, Hot Sulphur Springs Resort, and Steamboat Orthopedic Associates PC. Desserts for the barbecue, whose proceeds benefit the chamber, are brought to the event by Rocky Mountain Bar and Grill and Showboat Catering, with Quarter Circle Saloon and Granby Dairy donating and/or serving up ice cream and whip cream.

Summer Concert Series kicks off

Mike Music and the band are also scheduled to perform as the headline entertainment Thursday, July 10, in the park. The performance marks the first of the chamber’s free Summer Concert Series this year.

Guitar player Russ Chapman, of Paonia and hailed in Nashville as a “songwriter’s songwriter,” is set to play folk and bluegrass at 5 p.m. to start the show. Said to have “lyrical wit and medicine-show sensibility,” Chapman plays Americana-style “highly original” tunes with folk-blues, early swing and New Orleans “swamp music” thrown in the mix for good measure.

During a co-writing session with Ronnie Laws of Earth, Wind and Fire, Laws told Chapman “You’ve got a good thing there, man!” With a stomp and shuffle of some pretty talented feet as well, Chapman has been impressing audiences for well over a decade and is said to be “unforgettable.”

Mike Music and the Retreads (Texas-style blues “monster” bass player Dana Spigener, Louisiana-born guitarist Tommy Shreve, and drummer Dave Phillips) perform starting at 7:30 p.m. He and the Retreads, just one of the bands and musicians Music has played with in his 41-year career, are known to always put on a good blues performance. “It’s always exciting to play with guys who are proficient,” Music said. JR’s Grill will be catering barbecue for purchase.

Future Summer Concert Series features include BlueKrewe play Cajun and Zydeco
July 25, WhiteWater Ramble play Aug. 16, and Erica Brown Band plays blues Sept. 5. Sponsors include Grand Mountain Bank, Sky-Hi Daily News, West Grand Land Co., Kremmling Mercantile, The Moose Cafe, Buggy Stop, and the Kremmling Area Chamber of Commerce.
