Put on your cowboy hat and get out to Fraser’s John Work Arena on Saturday because "The Best Little Rodeo in Colorado" is starting another summer of exciting action.
The 2008 High Country Stampede Rodeo Series kicks off Saturday at 4 p.m. with its junior rodeo events. Then at 7 p.m., all the hard-hitting action of the open rodeo begins.
In addition to great rodeo, the Stampede also offers its famous barbecue dinner that starts every Saturday at 4 p.m. and continues to 9 p.m.
Beer, soft drinks, coffee and hot chocolate are also offered.
A summer Saturday night classic in the Fraser Valley, the Stampede is returning for the 25th straight season. This year's rodeo series will be held every Saturday at the John Work Arena from July 5 through Aug. 30.
The Stampede’s open rodeos are famous for some of the best local and regional cowboys and cowgirls who compete in no-holds-barred events such as barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, pole bending, team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. They always give it their best in hopes of winning their share of a lucrative cash purse.
The young wranglers also get competitive in the Stampede’s Junior Rodeo. These future rodeo stars engage in some of the same events as their adult counterparts in the open rodeo, including calf roping, barrel racing, pole bending, and mutton-bustin'.
Every Stampede rodeo has its share of colorful clowns, but their job is much more than just to entertain the spectators. During bull riding events, the rodeo clowns perform the dangerous work of distracting the bull after its rider has been thrown.
Many a cowboy owes his life and limbs to the quick and clever antics of the rodeo clowns.
All this summer’s High Country Stampede Rodeos are presented in the John Work Arena, one mile west of Fraser on County Road 73. The all-weather arena features a permanent cover with seating for more than 1,000 spectators.
