Hot Sulphur Springs initiates lawn watering restrictions

Although Hot Sulphur Spring’s residents can drink the town water, their lawns cannot.

A Hot Sulphur Springs watering restriction has been effect since late June.

The town mandates that trees and shrubs may be hand-watered every third day after 6 p.m. and before 9 a.m., but watering lawns or using sprinklers is restricted.

“When people start watering in the summertime, consumption of water in town greatly increases,” said Hot Sulphur Springs Town Clerk Sandy White.

As a precaution to prevent taxing the system, the restriction “allows us to maintain drinking water in the system,” she said.

The town is currently working with the state Water Quality Control Division after town residents were under a water boil order from April 7 to June 17.The state division sent the town an enforcement order dated June 26, outlining steps to which the town must conform.

As the town continues to make improvements, “the enforcement order prioritizes what needs to be done first,” White said.
