The Historic Downtown Granby Promotions Committee presents an encore of last year’s successful Oktoberfest with “a celebration of community and family fun” this weekend. The event kicks off Friday during the final farmers market of the season (see related story), and rounds out with a full day of festivities on Saturday.
“It’s exciting to bring back this Granby tradition and the overwhelming community response tells me it will be a successful and fun-filled event,” said Betsy Cook, Downtown Enhancement director. “We are working with local businesses and community organizations to showcase all the wonderful things Granby has to offer including food, music, and art.”
Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. at the Granby Town Hall for those who want to participate in the 5K Fun Run/Walk which begins with the Sunflower Maze at Morales Farms (and winds downhill to the town hall). Shuttles run 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. to the farm and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. Meanwhile, volunteers from the Granby Rotary will be serving a pancake breakfast 8 to 10 a.m. in the town hall and a dog agility demonstration will take place next door at Polhamus Park 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The afternoon’s events switch over to the Granby Events Parking Lot (next to Ian’s Mountain Bakery) with kids activities, wagon rides, Oktoberfest food vendors, beer garden and more live music (Washboard Annie and Dakota Blonde put on free performances Friday). Kids activities, scheduled noon to 4 p.m., include rootbeer garden, pumpkin decorating, crafts, face painting, and games. There’s also kids scarecrow and pumpkin contests.
Local performing acts will entertain 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at noon the adult beer garden opens, with selections for purchase from Grand Lake Brewing Company and Winter Park Winery.
Another highlight, new this year, are limited-edition 2008 Oktoberfest giclées by watercolor artist Howard Neville. The keepsakes, which capture autumn foliage in the SilverCreek Ridge area, may be purchased for $45 (estimated $60-$80 worth) and signed 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents and guests will also have the chance to find out who won the day’s earlier Fun Run/Walk, scarecrows will be on view and the winners will be announced, and patrons can relax to the sounds of bands Status Quotations (starting at 1 p.m.) and Juicebox (starting at 3 p.m.)
Blues and rock band Status Quotations is an ensemble of three local teens who broke into the musical world in Grand County this past year as a four-piece called The Runaways (under the direction of volunteers from the Grand County Blues Society’s Blues in the Schools program). The branch off trio consists of Sean Kerber on bass, Noah Ralph on drums, and Zack Thorpe on lead guitar; and bassists Nick Schade and Greg Doudna will be joining them for the Oktoberfest performance.
A modified version of Juicebox playing a variety of classics follows the Status Quotations performance. The band usually consists of singer and keyboardist Kay Irvine, bassist Yaniv Salzberg, whomever they can find as a drummer, and Robbie Gonzalez on guitar (who has a broken finger). For their Oktoberfest performance, accomplished musician Eric Olson will be joining Irvine and Salzberg (playing bass this time) on stage playing drums for what Irvine says will be “a fun little change of pace.”
