Ever wonder what effect energy drinks have on your body, if your heart beat thumps with the bass in songs, or how sugars affect yeast growth?
These are just a few of the questions West Grand School District students have been researching. The public will have a chance to hear their conclusions at the District’s 4th Annual Science Fair Open House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at West Grand High School’s library.
Students will be at the fair to answer questions about the projects they have been working on since the beginning of the school year, said math and science teacher Emmylou Harmon.
Harmon is organizing the fair along with Lori Haack, who teaches science and vocational science at the high school. Harmon estimates that at least 120 projects will be displayed at the fair. Guests can wander around and stay as long as they’d like, she said.
“We like to open it up to the parents to see what their kids have been doing,” Harmon added.
Classmates chose their projects and put together a tri-fold board that includes a scientific method: hypothesis, material, procedure, data, results and conclusion.
The sixth through 10th grades all have projects in the fair, and students from other grades also participated. The projects are requirements in the freshman and sophomore curriculum.
Winners will be announced at the end of the Thursday, Jan. 15, school day. Winners will receive plaques and Savings Bonds donated by Mountain Parks Electric. They will also be able to attend the Regional Science Fair in Grand Junction and from there could go to the state competition.
“It’s very competitive,” Harmon said.
Each year the high school has had students go to the regional competition, and two students have advanced to state competition. The 46th Denver Metro Regional Science Fair will take place Feb. 25 and 26 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
The state competition, the 54th Colorado Science and Engineering Fair, will take place April 9 to 11 at Colorado State University in the Lory Student Center ballrooms.
The national competition, The 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, will take place in Reno, Nev., May 10 to 16.
