Silverthorne’s Ford and Lorie Williams will spend their Valentine’s Day on ice.
Instead of sharing a nice dinner and watching TV, as they have on past holidays, they will fish with friends at the 12th Annual Wolford Mountain Reservoir Ice Fishing Tournament Saturday, Feb. 14.
The Kremmling Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging women and children to participate in the contest. Or, if they choose the warmer route, wives may spend Valentine’s Day getting a massage or shopping at any of Kremmling’s businesses while husbands fish.
“(Lorie) always out fishes me,” Ford Williams said. “It’s the first tournament she’s doing with me and I’m sure she’ll beat me.”
While this will be their first time celebrating the Valentine’s Day on ice, they have fished together on several other holidays. “We used to go fishing on Christmas day sometimes,” he said.
He plans to make the Valentine’s Day on the ice unique for he and his wife of 10 years. One option he joked is to upgrade from hot dogs to bratwurst on the grill.
“We’ll definitely have to do something special,” Williams said. “What it is, I’m not sure yet.”
Williams, 46, recently took third place at the Three Lakes Fishing Contest in Granby.
He’s placed twice in Granby, but hasn’t been as lucky in the Kremmling tournament.
This year, he’s keeping his fingers crossed. He has fished at every Wolford Mountain Reservoir Ice Fishing Tournament. He doubts he’ll win this year, but any extra income would help during the bad economy, Williams said.
“It just makes me fish harder,” Williams said.
The Williams will join about 10 friends at the tournament.
“It’s actually kind of a big party for us,” Ford Williams said. “I guess I don’t take it as seriously as other tournaments. We really have a lot of fun. The best part is just having your friends around. It’s something to do outside; it’s beautiful.”
Anglers will compete for $5,000 in cash prizes at the tournament, and a lucky competitor could catch a $12,000 tagged fish. Participants who come in the top 10 spots for largest fish will receive cash prizes.
“It’s kind of an adrenaline rush,” Williams said. “I hardly sleep the night before. It’s a great place to fish.”
Wolford Mountain Reservoir is located six miles North of Kremmling on U.S. Highway 40. People can drive an ATV or snowmobile on the frozen reservoir. Hole drilling starts at 7 a.m., and a flare will fire to kickoff the event. Fishing is open until 3 p.m.
Types of fish include rainbow trout, brown trout, splake, cutbow trout, and Kokanee salmon. Prizes will be distributed at 4:30 p.m. on the back stage of the Visitor Center in the Kremmling Town Square the day of the contest.
Fishing licenses and entry forms will be checked before distributing prize money.
