The Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District received a bill this week for the recall election of three board members. The election took place on Feb. 17. All three board members " Dan O'Connell, Beth Sands and Pete Strohecker " retained their seats.
According the an invoice sent by the Grand County Clerk and Recorder's office, the district owes the county $7,824.42. The amount covers county staff time, postage, paper and office supplies.
The Clerk and Recorders office is charging the district for 280 hours of staff time at $20/hour for a total of $5,600. Total postage costs for mail-in ballots and letters sent to voters is $1,414.42. The cost of paper and office supplies is $810.
The Fraser recreation district tallied its own expenses for the election at $5,106.74.
The total cost of the election - not including Fraser Rec District staff time - is $12,931.16.
The bill from the Clerk and Recorder will be paid from the rec district's general fund, said Michelle Lawrence, recreation supervisor.
Since the recall was not a regularly scheduled election, the district did not budget for it.
"We will have to make up for it somewhere else," Lawrence said. "It's money that could have gone to youth programming, archery supplies or saved for the gymnastics floor (in the new recreation center).
"It's money we would have been able to utilize in a much more productive manner."
For the money, Lawrence said, "I hope (taxpayers) learned that recall elections are very costly. Hopefully, we can learn from this and let the regular process be in place."
