Cheers from members of the Grand County Model Railroad Club filled the Granby Town Hall boardroom when a land lease was conditionally approved on Tuesday.
The lease is for a one-half acre town parcel near County Road 574 along the railroad tracks next to Kaibab ballparks outer right field.
Set to be called the Moffat Road Railroad Museum, two buildings 4,000 square feet in size will occupy the town land for $10 a year in a 30-year lease. Also planned is a railroad interpretive park with several cars and a locomotive.
Town officials ensured progress on the site would commence soon by including a five-year action clause in the lease contract.
Railroad club member Jack Bakken told trustees the club plans to start digging once proper permits are lined up. Already, the nonprofit club has gained upwards to $25,000 in committments to help launch the project, but success of the project will depend on further fundraising, Bakken said.
Club officials were planning to attend a grant writing session to also make grant applications more competitive, he said.
Club founder Dave Naples promised the town that his club would be good tenants.
Ninety-nine percent of what we do is based on public perception, he said.
