Families awaiting participants to cross the finish line in the Run for Independence will find themselves strategically located for pancakes and a later fishing derby on the Fourth of July this Saturday.
As tradition would have it, the Fraser River Lions Club is hosting its Pancake Breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday, where volunteers cook up stacks of all-you-can-eat plain or blueberry pancakes with orange juice, coffee and sausages.
“It's a tasty way to launch the Independence weekend,” said Lions volunteer Jancie Hughes.
Youngsters 14 years old and younger are encouraged to grab their fishing rods and head to the Lions Fishing Ponds next to Safeway across Highway 40 from the pancake feast.
Registration for the annual Kid's Fishing Derby — also sponsored by the Lions Club — takes place at 11 a.m., with fishing starting at noon.
Prizes are available for the biggest and most fish caught by anglers in several age categories. Parents and grandparents are invited to accompany their children and grandchildren and cheer them on to victory (or help with bobbers, worms and flies).
Lions volunteers will be on site to assist with registration, measuring fish and assisting with removing fresh catches from hooks.
“It's a great way to introduce youngsters to fishing, as the ponds have been recently stocked and the chances of catching a trout are excellent,” Hughes said.
