Winter Park Ski Train's return appears likely

Winter Park Resort officials say they expect the Ski Train to return this year after a deal is finalized in about two weeks.

High-ranking resort officials said in informal discussions Friday night that all parties to the deal, including the resort, Union Pacific Railroad and Amtrak, are on board and awaiting the approval only of the Federal Railroad Administration for the deal to be consummated.

That approval is expected within two weeks, they said.

The Ski Train was sold in April to the Algoma Central Railway Inc. and was moved to Canada after 69 years of serving Winter Park.

In September, The Associated Press reported that Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, which operates freight and excursion trains in six states including Colorado, wanted to take over the service.

At the time, Union Pacific reportedly agreed to let Iowa Pacific use the same route the previous Ski Train owners used, and Iowa Pacific President Ed Ellis said the train would use his company's equipment while Amtrak would provide the crews.
