SUMMIT COUNTY - A 44-year-old woman is in critical condition at St. Anthony Central after being repeatedly stabbed with a knife early Wednesday, two miles southeast of Breckenridge.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office responded to Illinois Gulch Road at about 1:55 a.m. on a report of a domestic violence in progress, according to Pam Henderson, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
When deputies arrived they found both the woman, whose identity has not been released, and Steven Carter, 31, unconscious from multiple stab wounds. They were found in a common hallway of the Wildflower complex, Henderson said.
The woman was flown to St. Anthony Central and underwent several hours of surgery.
Carter, who authorities say appears to have repeatedly stabbed himself, is also in critical condition at St. Anthony Central, according to Henderson.
He was taken first to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco before an ambulance drove him to the Denver hospital, Henderson said.
Carter is currently in custody at the hospital. He is under investigation for attempted second-degree murder, domestic violence and violation of bail bond conditions.
Henderson said that although Carter knew the woman, authorities are not sure of their exact relationship.
Charges against Carter include criminal attempt of second degree murder, domestic violence and violation of bail bond conditions. No bond has been set for him.
Carter's photo was available because he was booked on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs two weeks ago, Henderson said.
