In spite of the fact that the official prognostication on Groundhog Day was “six more weeks of winter,” that would mean an early spring for us.
Chances are, in spite of our sparse snowfall, we'll be enjoying winter weather through the end of April. It's time to put out the A.P.B. for signs of Spring. The first sign on spring has already been spotted — by me — that would be the daylight. Since the first day of winter, we've already gained back an hour and fifteen minutes of daylight. In approximately six weeks we'll celebrate the first day of spring. Look for the signs.

The flags of the nations are still flying in Grand Lake, and the Winter Olympics Grand Lake Style will go on through the end of the week. This week, the two Olympic torches will travel through town at more businesses. When each establishment has the torch, they will feature a special or showcase something from their chosen country. Here's the schedule for the passing of the torches this week: Monday a.m. Mountain Foods and Never Summer and p.m. Grand Lake Brewery, Tuesday a.m. Blue Water Bakery and The Emporium and p.m. Rapids, Wednesday a.m. Grand Valley Flooring and Grand Lake Diner and p.m. Bears Den, Thursday a.m. Fat Cat's and Grand Lake Wine & Spirits and p.m. Terrace Inn, Friday a.m. Manes to Tame and Jack Straw and p.m. Daven Haven.
Grand Lake held it's own Olympic Games in the village last Saturday. And the winners are: Snow Sculptures — Never Summer, Grand Pizza, Spirit Lake Lodge; Bed Sled Race — GL Fire Dept., McManus Irish Idiots, Sagebrush; Teapot Curling — The Skippers, Texas the Other Country, NewsFoundland and best curling costumes Outback Divas; Flag Football — Lariat, Sagebrush; Human Bowling — Snow Arabs, Dominator, Bed Heads 3; Best Costume at the Ball — Ken Lund as Tanya Harding, C21 Moroccan Delegation Brenda Freeman & Cathy Walton-Smith, and German Fraulein Michele; and Grand Lake King and Queen — Jim & Stephanie Kroeple of Bears Den, Clive & CarolAnn Smith of Waconda, Sean Murphy & Lisa Jenkins of Gateway. A good time was had by all!

On Thursday, the Circle H Lodge will have another concert at 7 p.m. Blues band Soulmate will be here all the way from India. This show may represent a cultural fusion, but their music is all blues.
