The Middle Park Panther softball team is off and running this season with a 10-4 record, including a 4-2 mark in the Metropolitan League.
The Lady Panthers and Coach Robbie Cheesman are making things happen with the minimum number of players required to field a squad. The team is composed of Arielle Steinberg, Alex Gallegos, Katelyn Adams, Morgan Milstead, Mikey Cross, Katie Matfeld, Hannah Davidson, Shelby Brueske and Katharyn Woodard.
Coach Cheesman said the team is going through the normal ups and downs that are experienced in any season but are working hard to enter the postseason playing well.
Middle Park started the season with a 23-0 victory over Machebeuf. In a three-game day late in August, the Lady Panthers lost to Arvada, 7-5, and then defeated Skyview, 3-2, and Arvada, 5-4.
After losing its first home game of the year to Legend, 17-2, Middle Park reeled off five straight wins. In succession, the Panthers beat Highlands Ranch JV, 20-0, Jefferson, 17-0, John F. Kennedy, 5-3, and Englewood, 12-0 and 17-2.
In the most recent games, Middle Park has defeated Sheridan, 17-2, and Faith Christian, 19-4, while losing to Lutheran, 9-2, and Platte Canyon, 13-3.
Milstead is leading the Lady Panthers in hitting with a .564 batting average in and in home runs with two. She also leads the team's lowest ERA while Woodard leads the pitching staff in strikeouts. Gallegos leads the team in RBIs with 26.
In the victory over Faith Christian, the Panthers scored early and often, putting up nine runs in the first inning and five in the second. Five more runs were scored in the fourth inning to salt the game away.
Steinberg, Gallegos, Milstead and Matfield all had three hits while Adams and Cross both were credited with two hits. Milstead had six RBIs while Matfield pushed across three runs and Gallegos, Adams and Brueske had two RBIs apiece. Adams, Milstead and Mattfield each had two doubles.
Milstead was the winning pitcher in the game, giving up four hits and three earned runs, while striking out six.
The Panthers played on the road yesterday at St. Mary's Academy and will travel to Denver tomorrow to play Holy Family. The final home game of the regular season will be played on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. The team then finishes the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 5 against Peak to Peak.
