Stenicka wins NASTAR, races Alpine Championship at WP Resort

Nick Stenicka, 20, a Fraser resident won the overall title in the Nature Valley NASTAR National Championship at Winter Park on March 25.

His performance earned him an all-expense-paid trip to South America to train with the US Ski Team in August.

Stenicka will race the US Alpine Championship Wednesday through Sunday at Winter Park Resort.

"I'm pretty excited about the race," Stenicka said. "I am happy for what I accomplished at NASTAR."

Next up, he's going to try to beat the guys in front of him, he said in an interview this week. Will he have a competitive advantage since he grew up skiing Winter Park?

"Everyone has skied in all these (spring) conditions, they're all used to it."

Stenicka grew up in Fraser, attended Middle Park High School until his Junior year, then attended and graduated from the Winter Sports School in Park City, Utah.

This season has been a good one, he said, finishing almost every race and qualifying for the Alpine Championship. Despite two surgeries for a torn meniscus, he is racing well.

He traveled to Minnesota and finished in the Top 10 in races there. Recently, along with the Winter Park Competition team, Stenicka traveled to Alaska and he raced in wet, raining conditions.

Stenicka is applying to Division 1 colleges and hopes to make a college ski team. Racing on a college team will guarantee that he will be up against World Cup caliber racers. Plus, travel expenses to races are paid by the college, unlike the US Ski Team where the skiers pay their way.

For this winning season, his sponsors are his parents, John and Karen Stenicka. And, he's not worried about his knee.

"I don't think about it all anymore," he said.
