Dan Zacek Smith has been in law enforcement for his entire career. He has been married for 13 years to Amy Zacek Smith, also in law enforcement. After working in the field in various states including Arizona and Missouri, they have made their home in Granby with their daughter, Morgan, 7.
What do you like best about working in Granby?
I love the small town feel and working for the department. I have the opportunity to really get to know the community. Without the community support, we couldn't do all the things we do.
What do you do outside of police work?
I hike, camp, and fish. I'm currently rebuilding a 1960 Ford Galaxy.
Do you ever think about the dangerous aspects of your job?
It's something you have to accept with the job. We are here to serve and protect.
Have you ever been injured on the job?
Several years ago I broke my leg chasing someone and falling through ice. I broke my foot during the Grand Meadows fire in 2010.
What are your job duties?
In a small department we do everything, including detective work. Some investigations last several months. We follow cases all the way to the end and sometimes testify in court. It's part of the process.
Police work is a career choice. It's not for the money or prestige. People are called to it. I have friends outside of police work that keep me grounded.
