Freeta tells her tale of life in Grand County

Woof! My name is Freeta. Freeta Goodhome. Thanks to the help of Grand County Pet Pals and the Granby Animal Shelter, I was adopted into my forever home in 2007 when I was two years old. I am one of the fortunate ones, it wasn't that my first home was bad, it was just that, well-I guess I was bad! It just wasn't a good fit and fortunately my first family was smart and relinquished me to the shelter and I quickly found a home with people used to dealing with cantankerous basset hounds.

While I was at the shelter, I learned that not all pets are as lucky as I. And, after moving into my new home and working with the Advocates, I realized not all people are so lucky, either.

So, in 2010 I ran my tail off collecting bones and was elected the first Grand Dog of Grand County. It is a fabulous fundraiser for my two pet projects: Advocates for a Violence-Free Community and Grand County Pet Pals, both local 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations dedicated to the welfare of families and animals. I had so much fun campaigning and going so many places. My favorite event was "Make Your Basset An Asset" night!

With "votes" costing just $1, the other contestants and I raised $10,000. Not too bad for a county of less than 15,000 residents. That money has been used to raise awareness of the help and assistance available to people and their pets who are victims of domestic violence. Many people delay seeking help because they are afraid to leave their pets behind and who can blame them? Grand County has many safe home options that are able to take a pet, or my friends at the Grand County Animal Shelter will help take care of the pets like they did for me. Isn't that cool?

Lily Wood is a candidate for the County. She has experienced abuse and life in a shelter as a homeless pet. She has compassion for those that need their forever home...a safe home. She believes everyone deserves those basic fundamental rights and will work hard, if elected, to make that possible for as many animals and humans as possible. A vote for Lily is a vote for YOU
