Grand County Historical Association upcoming events

The Grand County Historical Association has three events planned for the month of August, including a Berthoud Pass trek, Hot Sulphur Springs Cemetery tour, and Kremmling ammonite bed tour and picnic.

The Berthoud Pass trek is set to take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, and will meet at Cozens Ranch Museum for coffee and carpool. This easy two-to-three hour hike will be led by historian and Grand County Historical Association Museums Director Tim Nicklas, who will teach participants about the original stage coach road.

Nicklas, who has been running Grand County Historical Association for two years and was the organizer of the Grand Winter Sports Carnival, also will be leading a tour of the century-old cemetery above Hot Sulphur Springs.

Starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, participants will learn about the characters buried in the cemetery and will meet for carpooling at Grand County Pioneer Village Museum.

A tour of the ammonite beds near Kremmling will be led by University of Colorado Museum of Natural History paleontologist and new Grand County Historical Association board member Toni Culver.

Ammonites are an extinct underwater crustacean from the prehistoric period which leave impressions of their circular snail-shaped shell in shale formations like those found on Wolford Mountain.

The tour will meet at Heritage Park Museum, Kremmling, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, for carpooling and coffee and will end with a brown bag picnic at the museum.

All three events require tickets which cost $20 for Historical Association members and $25 for non-members.

The Historical Association also asks that participants RSVP for the events by calling 970-726-5488.
