Weekend of classic and new races at Winter Park Resort

New this year at Winter Park Resort is a two-day mountain biking event.

On Saturday the Point to Point is the traditional race. Sunday marks the start of an event new to Grand County racing - a short track race where participants go head-to-head as fast as they can on a track, un-timed.

The Grand Park Short Track X-Country is a mile and half in length behind Grand Park Community Recreation Center.

"The race is in a meadow and everyone will see the entire course from every area, said race coordinator Laurie Mooney.

"All races are on a mountain bike, non-timed lap event. Participants will start in their class. Beginners will do two laps, and all other classes will do three laps."

Jack Boltz, 56, is a part-time resident of Fraser who has been coming Winter Park since 2000. He started racing the Epic Singletrack Series in 2003. So far this year he has participated in every race, and this weekend he will compete in his sixth Point to Point on Saturday. He is also racing the Short Track on Sunday.

"This is the first time Winter Park is doing the short track and I'm going to give it a try. I've done the short track race in Boulder and it was a fun, short, high-intensity race," Boltz said.

"The race is really hard because it's short, and you just push yourself. During the race I asked myself 'why am I doing this' but when you're done, it's very cool."

He will pre-ride the short track on Friday.

If you want an all out, anaerobic ride until your heart is going to explode, try the short track, said Mooney.

"This is completely different from everything Winter Park has done before. Our riders, who are super fit, will love it," she said.

"I've done all the races in the series so far and this series is so good," said Boltz. "I talk to people at other races who are not familiar with Winter Park and I tell them if you want to go to a well run race, come here. The quality of the courses and amount of support with marshals is really good. Plus, race results are up the same day."
