More than 300 Grand County children in grades K-5 do not have enough food to eat on the weekends, according to the Mountain Family Center, which is working on a solution.
During the 2011/2012 school year, Totes of Hope ensured that between 68 and 75 children in West Grand schools (grades K-5) did not face weekend hunger. Children from low-income families were provided with a tote filled with nutritious food for the weekend. On Monday mornings, these kids returned to school with sharp minds, strong bodies and ready to LEARN.
This highly successful program is now being expanded to include East Grand Schools, where approximately 250 children will benefit from the Tote Program.
Mountain Family Center has been presented with an opportunity to match the community's generosity through a partnership with the Grand Foundation and Sprout Donor Advised Fund. A grant of $65,000 will be presented to the Center once the Tote Program has raised a matching $65,000. By leveraging the gifts through Grand Foundation, the Center will be able to continue the Totes of Hope Program for three years.
