Interview with a rodeo queen

This year's Middle Park Fair and Rodeo Queen is Dakota Docheff, a recently graduated senior from West Granby High School. When did you start with 4-H?I started at 6, as a Cloverbud. It's been 12 years. What has been your favorite position in 4-H?The leadership division. Being president was my favorite because ... I just got to run the meetings and be sure that they ran [well], and teach the little kids coming up how to be president and run the meeting right. It was more of a teaching role. What events have you entered this year?Beef, market lambs, and horse. I'm also the MP Fair Queen, so I do all the rodeos. At the rodeo [Wednesday] there's a Queen barrel race. All the proceeds go into the scholarship fund. I'll be riding in that. What is your favorite event?I love running flags. You get to run fast around in a circle, and that's all you have to do. You don't have to compete against anybody, it's fun, and you're all just laughing.Do you have future plans?Yes, I'm heading down to NJC [Northeastern Junior College] on August 18th. I'm going to major in accounting, with an emphasis in agricultural business. For you, what does it meant to be Rodeo Queen? It means everything - all the opportunities, to travel around the state. I got to travel to Wyoming. I get to be a role model to little kids. People come up to you and ask, 'Who are you?' and you get to tell them about your fair. There are endless opportunities. What advice can you give to future Rodeo Queen hopefuls?Just smile and be yourself. Be good and keep your grades up. Be yourself, that's all that matters. It's been really fun [being in 4-H], and every kid should be involved in it. It really does pay off.
