Snow Mountain Stampede race a success

Yellow and red aspen leaves fell on the YMCA of the Rockies course as high schoolers from across the state competed in the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede mountain bike race on Sunday, Sept. 23.

The race was put on by the Colorado High School Cycling League and featured nearly 40 teams from across the state.

The teams camped for the night at the ranch and reported falling asleep to the sound of bugling elk.

Race day came with not a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze to help keep the competitors peddling through three laps of the course.

The course bombed down steep single track hills, climbed through aspen stands, and blasted through a creek to make a challenging course for the high school competitors.

Cowbells were ringing and supporters were screaming as the races began in the morning and continued through the afternoon.

When all was said and done, team and individual winners where awarded with the gold for Division 1 going to both Boulder High School and Fairview High School. Vail Valley Composite took the silver with Salida High School in close tow for the bronze.

Division 2 winners included Animas High School, Green Mountain Composite, Grand Valley, and Evergreen High School teams taking the cake.

Individual results for girls Division 1 and 2 varsity showed India Waller of Animas High School taking first with a total course time of 1:26:15.60, Ksenia Lepikhina of Fairview High School taking second with a time of 1:26:18.54, and Kelsay Lundberg of Salida High School taking third with a time of 1:29:25.10.

Individual results for boys Division 1 and 2 varsity showed Sepp Kuss of Durango High finishing first with a time of 1:29:06.10, Michael Dessau of Boulder High School taking second with a time of 1:31:25.88, and Garrett Gerchar placing third with a time of 1:32:25.48.

Almost 400 riders entered the event.
