The home of Mary Baumberger, 77, which is located near Shadow Mountain Reservoir, was ransacked sometime after Aug. 15 while she was in the hospital for emergency back surgery after taking a fall in her home.
Baumberger was born in 1934 in her father's ranch house, located near what is now Shadow Mountain Reservoir, and raised in Grand County in the Grand Lake area and has been here long enough to know many of the people who have been active in the county over the years. She also has a long history of kindness and hospitality.
"Maybe that's why God invented me, so I can take in all of the lost souls, I take them all in," Baumberger said. "Maybe I won't be so nice next time."
Baumberger continues to recover from her surgery as she tries to cope with the thought of loosing some of the items that meant the most to her such as her late husband's Stetson cowboy hat, bolo ties, cuff links, and his collection of guns.
The Grand County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident during which the thief took an extensive list valuables and objects that were treasured by Baumberger.
Some of the more notable items stolen include: $3,000 in cash, 20 bars of silver, a 35-mm camera, and a large amount of jewelry.
"I worked hard all of my life and saved up little by little to buy that stuff," she said. "Now it is all gone."
The story Baumberger told serves as a sad reminder of the world as it is today.
"It had to be somebody that knows me," she said.
Baumberger is offering a reward for any information that may lead to the recovery of her belongings or to the arrest of the thief who ruthlessly ransacked her home.
She even stated that if she could recover all of her belongings she would drop all of the charges against the thief.
"I just want to let people know that there is somebody out there that is going to rip them off so they need to lock their house," she said.
