Howard Head closes doors in Grand

GRANBY/FRASER - A physical therapy and sports rehabilitation business in Granby with a 31-year history is closing at the end of October.Customers of the Howard Head Sports Medicine clinic, formerly Alpine Physical Therapy, received a letter recently informing them of the decision to close the Fraser and Granby clinics due to "geographic distances, start-up costs, changes in health care and other factors."Lori Meyers of Fraser originated the Alpine Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation three decades ago, a small two-room clinic in the lower level of King's Crossing in Winter Park. Two years later, the business moved to the historic Pinewood building, then in 1997, it moved back to King's Crossing while a new Alpine Physical Therapy building was built in downtown Fraser, where the business has been since. The business eventually established roots at the Granby Specialty Clinic-turned-Ten Mile Family Medicine clinic in Granby. Meyers sold the business to Howard Head Sports Medicine in June of 2011.Meyers said she did not foresee the need for that company to pull out of Grand County. In early summer 2012, Vail Valley Medical Center notified clinics of its decision to end the service agreement with Howard Head for physical and occupational therapy, according to the letter. The announcement affected the mountain clinics of Howard Head Sports Medicine in Grand, Summit and Eagle counties, which worked to develop a business plan to function as arms of the parent company. However, "it has been determined that Fraser and Granby clinics are not feasible to move forward with the plan," the letter states."I'm sad to see that practice go as a physical therapy group," said Dr. Jeff Lipke of Ten Mile Family Medicine. A new lessee for that section of the building has not been determined, Lipke said."I hope the therapists who remain will find good employment because there is a continuing need for that in the community," he said.Patients' medical records from Alpine Physical Therapy/ Howard Head Sports Medicine can be obtained at the Vail Valley Medical Center in Vail."Thank you for very much for the tremendous community support over the past 31 years," Meyers wrote to her patients. "We will miss working with all of you more than our words can express."
