Winter Park's Jim Shaw: The go-to guy for learning tele

WINTER PARK - Jim Shaw is a name that might not be very familiar to you. But in the world of professional ski instructors, Jim Shaw is nothing short of a legend.

Shaw was recently named the Telemark Specialist for the Professional Ski Instructors of America, or PSIA, which means this guy is it, the top dog when it comes to tele-skiing.

Shaw has been skiing for 47 years and teaching skiing to others for 32 years, which adds up to more than 4,000 days on the snow, according to Shaw. He is one of a handful of PSIA members that offers telemark examinations to instructors, which are needed in order for them to advance as an instructor, and he also is an examiner for alpine instructors.

Shaw now spends his days teaching lessons at Winter Park and Mary Jane for both telemark and alpine skiing and is going to be the driving force behind Mary Jane's newest addition to their ski ad ride school, a telemark lesson that takes place on Sundays and maxes out at four people per lesson.

"I live here because I want to, not because I have to" Shaw said. "When the snow is good and things are right, its just as good here as anywhere."

Shaw lives in Tabernash with his wife of 18 years, Becky; son Eliot, who plays soccer; and daughter Morgan, who plays volleyball. Both of his children attend East Grand Middle School and have been skiing since they could walk.

Aside from being and avid skier, family man, and all around one of the coolest guys in the Valley, Shaw is also an avid climber when there is not snow on the ground. This guy wrote the book on climbing in the Fraser Valley. Literally, he wrote the guide book.

Shaw offers private lessons at Winter Park for both telemark and alpine skiing, so jump on the chance to ski with him this season and hope that some of his cool rubs off on you.
