The West Grand High girls basketball team continues to show improvement on the season, splitting a pair of non-league contests to earn a season record of 3-2. The Lady Mustangs fell to Clear Creek on Friday night, 52-28, before traveling to Aspen to earn a 55-38 victory over the Skiers.
In wrestling action, Steven Terrazas continued his impressive start to the season by pinning three opponents in the heavyweight division to earn the championship spot on the podium at the West Grand High School Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
Terrazas, a freshman at West Grand, brought the crowd to its feet with an exciting semi-final pin of last year's state runnerup from Wyoming. Terrazas ended up on the bottom of a pileup with the grappler from Wyoming, when he excecuted a quick reversal and subsequent pin to earn the victory.
Fellow West Grand wrestlers, Cole Tracy and Mitch Cunico, also fared well. Tracy was 4-1 on the day and was given fourth place when he lost a coin flip for third place. A sophomore, Tracy, pinned all of his four opponents in his victories in the 132 lb. weight division.
Cunico, a freshman wrestler for the Mustangs, earned second place with a 3-1 mark. Cunico competed in the 98 pound weight division.
The Lady Mustangs started well against Clear Creek before letting the lead slip away and losing to the Golddiggers, 52-28.
"The first half was the best half of basketball we've played all year, taking a lead against a very good and very tall Clear Creek team." Coach Davin Boydstun said. "It was just a game where the little things didn't go our way. We missed some easy shots and made some mental mistakes that led to the game slipping away."
Kristina Ekren led the team in scoring with Anna Cunico and Kaitlyn Adams scoring six points apiece.
The Mustangs dominated the first half against Aspen, were outscored in the third frame and then rebounded to win going away, 55-38.
"This was our most complete game yet," Coach Boydstun said. "We started strong with a 21-6 lead after the first period. Kaitlyn (Adams) and Sky (LePage) dominated in the post offensively and defensively. Sarah (Vance) was shooting very well and playing tough defense. Kristina (Ekren), Bailey (Monahan) and Payton (Coleman) played great defense, leading the team to 22 steals for the game."
"We slipped a little in the third quarter," Boydstun continued. "But the girls regained their composure and finished very strong, winning the fourth quarter, 17-8."
Adams led the team in scoring with 20 points, Vance added 11, LePage chipped in with 10 points and Coleman added eight to the winning total.
The girls played Middle Park on Tuesday of this week and will be off for the Christmas break.
