Winter Park Comp. Center starts season well

The Winter Park Competition Center is off to a strong start this season with a first and second place in slalom and super G this past weekend in Jackson Hole, Wyo., four girls going to the finals for Copper Mountain's U.S. Freestyle Moguls Selection event, and Bruce Perry taking third overall during the Copper Mountain event.

The U.S. Freestyle Moguls Selection at Copper Mountain gives freestyle skiers an opportunity to qualify for one of two spots on the U.S. Ski Team for the FIS Freestyle World Cup and NorAm. The last day for the event is Friday, Dec. 21.

"They all skied really well and we're really proud," said Freddy Mooney, freestyle coach for the Competition Center.

Perry's third overall finish during the event at Copper is quite an accomplishment considering he was skiing against some of the top freestyle athletes and that this is the first event of the season.

"This is the first mogul skiing of the season," Mooney said. "So you have to go all out to try to get those U.S. team spots despite having little practice on snow."

Four girls qualified for the finals, with Alyssa Lawson placing sixth overall. The four girls who made it to the finals for the freestyle event qualified for the finals with the following placements: Kelly Lawson, sixth; Jordan Zoller, 12th; Kylie Vanhoesem, 14th; and Alyssa Lawson, 15th (6th overall in finals).

Kylie Vanhoesem qualified for the finals despite this being her first competitive run after blowing out her knee. She has been working hard at rehabilitation to get back on the snow, Mooney said.

Mooney also commented that a quarter of the girls who qualified for the finals were skiing for Winter Park against some of the top international athletes and members of the U.S. Ski Team.

The Rocky Mountain Divisional events for freestyle will begin in January after the team takes a break for the holidays.

"Our team looks great," Mooney said. "We have a huge team with a ton of talent and we're excited to see how this team does."

Jackson Hole

The alpine team for the Winter Park Competition Center had two podium spots at a event that took place the weekend of Dec. 15, in Jackson Hole.

Taylor Grauer and Tori McVicker took the first and second place spots for the womens slalom and super G. These girls are in the highly competitive post-grad program at Winter Park Resort.

USA Snowboard Association

The snowboard team from Winter Park Competition Center also raked in quite a few placements at the past weekend's USASA event that was also held at Copper Mountain.

Josh Wisda took first place for the halfpipe competition for the 16 to 17 age group, Lydia Silber took first for the 10 to 11 age group, Elan Fleetwood took first for the 8 to 9 age group and her sister Mandy took second, and Grace Knight also took first in the 16 to 17 age group.

The Winter Park Freeski Park and Pipe Team also had some stellar results from this past weekend including: Birk Irving taking fourth place in the open class, Svea Irving taking first in the womens 10 to 12 age group, Hunter Carey taking fourth for the mens 10 to 12 age group, Cole Carson taking fifth for the mens 10 to 12 age group, Cal Carson taking fourth for the mens 13 to 14 age group, and Mark Knight taking fifth in the mens 13 to 15 age group.
