Book features local landscapes

A bedtime story called "Dreaming of Colorado" sends readers on a journey into the past, featuring treasured Colorado landscapes such as the Rocky Mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Illustrated by Stephanie Lowman, with the story written by Grant Collier who provides photos of Rocky Mountain National Park on a few of the book's pages, the children's story is a dreamy glimpse of "backward in time."

The book's characters, all wild animals found in Colorado's mountains, take an adventure on a time-travel canoe that engages them in the days of the Brachisosaurus, then the time of Sequoia trees in Colorado, volcanoes, the days when Arapaho Indians and herds of bison roamed the Great Plains, then the period of gold prospecting in the mountains. Cosmo the Cougar Cub is the main character in the story, and the reader follows Cosmo's dream throughout the book's pages, until his mother wakes him to get ready for school in the end.

Author Grant Collier points out in the story positives of getting a good-night's rest.

"You need to be rested and awake for school," says Cosmo's mom in the story. "And just think about all the things you can dream about while you sleep!"

To create scenes in the book, Collier scanned drawings created by his artist girlfriend Lowman, then with the aid of Photoshop, combined them with the photographs he has taken from locations all over the world, including the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Collier, of Arvada, has been working as a photographer and writer for 16 years. This is his ninth book and his first children's book. Lowman has been sketching and painting for longer than 20 years and this is her first book. According to her, the Rocky Mountains have long inspired her wildlife art.

Dreaming of Colorado is suitable for children ages 3-8. More information can be found at www.collierpublishing.com.
