To the Editor:
This is a letter I sent recently to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper:
I am writing this letter today in the desperate hope that you might read it and that it might in some small measure influence your decisions on this "gun control" issue.
I am pretty much like most people. I am saddened and shocked when some nitwit pulls off one of these acts of stupidity. I believe that these are the acts of some kind of deep-seated frustration and/or fear. I do not condone or excuse them in any way, shape or form. The fact that they seek out defenseless victims infuriates me.
You are going to be the last and only person in official power that can protect the Constitution of the United States, the Second Amendment to the Constitution, and the Constitution of the State of Colorado. Your oath of office DEMANDS that you uphold the constitutions.
If these "gun control" bills are passed, and you sign them, then you, and only you, will have restricted the rights of thousands of ordinary, law abiding, Colorado citizens, while doing nothing to stop real "gun violence."
These laws will not have any effect on criminals, gangs, suicides or these nitwits that perpetrate these atrocities.
I do believe that they will cause an "underground" gun market which, like drugs, will be a huge waste of time, manpower and money that Colorado doesn't have.
I also appeal to the politician in you. I believe that you would at least like to run for governor again. Maybe you are considering higher office, maybe even president. Vetoing these "gun control" bills would gain you an extraordinary amount of political good will among those voters nationwide that are on the side of the Second Amendment.
Please seriously consider this. No one hates gun deaths any more than I do. But I want things that will work, not empty feel-good restriction on the law abiding citizens of Colorado. Thank you.
