Grand Nordic Corner

YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic CenterMadshus Snow Mtn Stampede Marathon - 42K, 21K, 10K, and kids races - is finally here March 2-3. The two-day format worked so well last year that it is being repeated. Freestyle races will be on Saturday, with classic races on Sunday. The course will be a new 10.5km loop. SMR has worked hard to eliminate road crossings, increase the spectator experiences, eliminate the need to carry water, and gear the course for the citizen racer. The 2013 Stampede will be an American Birkebeiner & Kortelopet qualifier. We will have a free BBQ picnic for race participants Saturday afternoon and a Grand Nordic sponsored pasta dinner available with bonfire Saturday night. Adults for all you can eat meat or vegetarian lasagna with vege, salad, and brownie are 10.00, kids 6-12 are 6.00 with Kids 5 and under free. You don't have to be a racer to join us!Snow conditions are excellent with fantastic grooming so come enjoy the festivities. Every Wednesday SMR offers free skiing for locals. Just show your drivers license!Free Waxing Clinics Saturday mornings 9:30 to 10:30am through March 30, 2013. Learn basic waxing techniques and ski maintenance to increase your enjoyment of cross country skiing. Rotating subjects each week. Call the Nordic Center at 888-573-9622 for schedule. Meet people afterwards for skiing.Devils Thumb Ranch Activities CenterDevils Thumb offers the last free kids lesson this Friday 10am. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early if equipment is needed. A onetime 20.00 fee applies for hot choc and program fee. Call 970.726.8231 to sign up. Grand Lake Nordic CenterEnjoy the scenic views of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Arapahoe National Forest at the Grand Lake Nordic Center. We offer the beginner to advanced skier a variety of terrain on 35 km of classic and skate skiing trails. The terrain and trails are also excellent for snowshoeing, and we have a dedicated dog loop and kid's tubing hill! The GLMRD Nordic Center is a full-service, outdoor winter destination featuring our ski and snowshoe rentals, lessons, a retail shop, and a winter soup kitchen at the Lodge. Free XC skiingRight in the center of Winter Park/Fraser is the Grand Park Recreation Center. Grand Park grooms and tracks the 100-acre meadow behind the Rec Center which is available free to everyone for XC skiing, snowshoeing or just walking. You furry friend is welcome as well - just remember to clean up after your dog. No equipment is available at the Rec Center but Icebox Mountain Sports in Fraser can help you out. The Rec Center is the perfect spot for a swim or hot tub to relax after your ski.The Water Board roads on each side of the Fraser Valley are groomed by Grand Adventures for their snowmobile clients but they make the perfect avenue for cross country skiers to get into the high country. You can ski continuously from the Winter Park Resort and Tunnel Hill to the Little Vasquez, the Vasquez Loop, Elk Creek Road and all the way to the Experimental Forest. On the other side of the Valley, the roads go from opposite Mary Jane to the MeadowCreek Reservoir. The many parking areas give access for a short ski or an all day affair. Beware of fallen trees or those about to fall. The Forest Service has done a lot of work reducing these hazards but some still exist. Cell phones work over most of the Valley except when you really need them. Try to always go with a friend or at least tell someone where you are heading. You are sharing the trail with snowmobiles and other users. Please be courteous and respectful of other people, dogs, and wild animals. The guides for snowmobile tours are careful and quick to slow down when encountering other users. But be prepared with extra clothes, food and water because Mother Nature can be demanding and fickle. Fraser to Granby TrailConditions are great on the entire trail from the Winter Park Resort to Val Moritz and Granby Ranch. Grooming is done by volunteers when possible but have patience as much of the trail is very affected by the blowing snow. All sections are open for XC skiing, snowshoeing or just plain walking with your dog! Please observe dog leash restriction in the Beavers area and pick up after your pooch. We have opened a trail from Val Moritz toward Granby Ranch to connect with their XC trails and the Lodge. Also the top of Cty Rd 87 to the XC trails at Sol Vista is good walking or snowshoeing. Logs are being taken out on the road so skiing is difficult. Parking is available at the top of 87 and Sol Vista welcomes you to their XC trails. Watch out for falling and fallen trees - we have removed so many but they keep coming down. If you can volunteer to help, please call Andy Miller at 726-4099 or Diana Lynn Rau at 887-0547. Above all, be courteous to landowners and respect private property. More on how this great community resource was developed and is currently maintained next week.Grand NordicGrand Nordic is the countywide Nordic ski club that promotes Cross Country skiing for kids, schools, and all ages.
