Sky-Hi News brings home gold in Better Newspaper Contest

The Sky-Hi News earned a General Excellence Award for overall news reporting and presentation in print and online media in the 2013 Colorado Press Association “Better Newspaper Contest.”

The Granby-based newspaper beat out 11 newspapers in its class with circulation of 4,001-7,000.

The Sky-Hi team brought home 48 individual staff awards in news reporting, design, advertising and online journalism, and the newspaper garnered Sweepstakes awards in the categories of Editorial, Online, and Photo and Design.

“The work done by the team at the Sky Hi News is remarkable,” said Sky-Hi Publisher Matt Sandberg, “and having that work validated by a panel of peers judging a body of work from a year’s time period really validates the efforts each of our staffers put into the newspaper every day. It is a personal honor to work with the staff at Sky-Hi News, and more importantly to be a part of a team that works hard to connect with the residents and visitors to Grand County through our work.”

It is the second consecutive year the Sky-Hi News has won General Excellence in its class.

“I am privileged to work with a team of dedicated and talented professionals,” said Sky-Hi News Managing Editor Tonya Bina. “We work hard every day getting interesting information out to our readers, and it’s nice to be recognized when hard work pays off.”

The Middle Park Times was also a winner in the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest, bringing home a Photo/Design Sweepstakes Award on top of 17 individual staff awards. The Middle Park Times competes against 22 other Colorado weekly newspapers with circulations of 1,001 to 2,000.

The Virginia Press Association in cooperation with member newspaper publishers judged more than 4,500 Colorado newspaper entries this year and determined the winners among all daily and non-daily member newspapers — large and small, metro to small-town — throughout Colorado.
