Hiker dies on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rescuers have recovered the body of a Fort Collins man from Longs Peak via helicopter.

The body of Matthew D. Burklow, 25, was flown to a helipad at Upper Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park. His body was then transferred to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

Tuesday morning, June 10, park rangers were notified that Burklow was overdue from the Longs Peak area. He had left at about 2 a.m. on Monday, June 9, from Fort Collins. He was expected at work at 4 p.m. that day.

An investigation revealed Burklow likely planned to travel along the Keyhole Route. Rangers searched the area and located the his body at about 3:30 p.m. His body was located roughly 1,000 feet below the Keyhole route down the Trough.
