Robinson: Shining Stars and NSCD

If you are a resident or have visited Grand County, Colorado you have likely seen the brightly colored sign in Tabernash for Shining Stars Foundation. Shining Stars Foundation provides services centered around recreational and social activities for children ages 8-18 who are living with pediatric cancer or another life threatening illness year-round. The organization serves families living all over the country with a special focus placed on children living with physical or mental disabilities as a result of their treatment or disease. This groundbreaking organization is one of few nationally that has the ability to safely adapt a diverse range of outdoor adventures to meet the needs of those with a life threatening illness.

On Feb. 3-7 young adults who are, or have been, affected by cancer or life threatening illness will gather at the Arapahoe Lodge in Winter Park to participate in a four-day Rocky Mountain Adventure. Shining Stars Foundation in collaboration with National Sport Center for the Disabled, Mara Pacyga – Elevate Pilates, Dr. Karen Smith, PhD and Lisa Atencio have come together to provide this unique opportunity.

During the upcoming camp, participants will enjoy daily adventures to Winter Park Resort for adaptive skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing. Evening activities will be focused on healing and health through mental and physical wellness. The group will discuss important topics such as exercise, nutrition as well as money management, transitional and disability services.
