Grand County skiers return from Junior World Championships in Italy

Three local skiers recently returned from a trip to Italy where they competed in the Junior World Championships to finish out their winter season.

One skier, Bruce Perry Jr., 17, was just formally accepted to the U.S. Ski Team for the next winter season. “It really just hit me a couple of days ago,” he said. “I'm stoked on it.”

Getting invited to join the U.S. Ski Team is quite an accomplishment for a 17-year-old.

Perry finished 6th in moguls during the Junior World Championships and he took the 13 spot in dual moguls and was the top American to finish the moguls.

Casey Andringa, 17, and Colter Hale, 17, both competed well during the event with Hale finishing 8th in slopestyle and Andringa clinching a 14 spot in moguls and 8th in dual moguls.

Andringa skied phenomenal, according to Coach Dan Studer, despite the adverse weather and difficulty of the course. The course was extremely steep and the bumps were taller and larger than the bumps at Winter Park.

“They just found it tough to ski the course but they adapted well,” Studer said.

Andringa took out the top seed in his first dual but he unfortunately lost his second. “Casey is so close, we had him change up some things this year and all he is lacking now is consistency and that will definitely come to him next year,” Studer said.

Hale's personal style is what scored him the 8th spot as he was receiving high scores for the tricks he was completing. “Once he starts getting some more doubles he is going to be hard to beat,” Studer said.

The ski season may be over, but these young competitors' training season is just around the corner. With training camps in Whistler and Mount Hood and water ramping in Steamboat Springs and Salt Lake City, these three skiers have a long summer ahead of them.

Perry extended a thank you to his coaches Dan Studer, Chris Seeman, Freddy Mooney and Scooter McDaniel for helping him to get where he is today and for always doing their best to make him a better skier and person.
