Obituary: Doug Shelton 1942-2013

Doug Shelton, age 71, passed away on Dec. 26, 2013, at Granby Medical Center after a period of illness. A 50-year Winter Park resident, Doug will be greatly missed by his family and the many friends he made in the Fraser Valley over the years.

Doug was raised in Denver before moving to Winter Park in 1962. He graduated from Denver’s South High School in 1960 and attended Western State University where he was a member of the ski team. He later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for six years as a Reservist, after which he was honorably discharged.

He began his ski industry career during the formative years of Winter Park Ski Resort, where he worked from 1962 to 1978. His positions included head of ski patrol, mountain manager and finally he served as vice president of operations and marketing, where he was instrumental in laying out the trails and overseeing construction operations in the Mary Jane expansion. He was also a founding partner of Ski the Rockies, an early ski industry marketing association.

After leaving Winter Park, he formed a partnership that acquired Ski Idlewild in Winter Park, where he was chief operating officer. Doug also served as a ski industry consultant in private practice and as president of the National Ski Patrol.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Josephine, brother Dave, also of the Fraser Valley, and his sister Sherry Shelton Franz. He is survived by: his wife Shari, his children Scott and Shannon Shelton; Larry Muskopf; Kristen Bacon; his five grandchildren Ella, Brennen, Evelyn, Georgia and Max; his sister-in-law Sherry Shelton; his brother-in-law Peter Franz; and his nephews Ryan and Rob Shelton and Colin Franz.

Doug’s family invites you to join in a memorial service celebrating Doug’s life, to be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Pole Creek Golf Club, 6827 County Road 51, Tabernash.
