Father and son from Fraser complete coast-to-coast bike ride

FRASER —A father and son recently completed a 3,872-mile bike ride coast-to-coast, starting in San Francisco, Calif., and ending in Portsmouth, N.H.

The ride took 52 days for Tom Evans, 65, and Tommy Evans, 15, to complete, averaging 80 miles a day with nearly perfect weather for the ride.

“From day one to day 51, it was sunny all day, except for a few minutes of rain in California, then on day 52 it poured all day,” Tommy said.

The pair completed the ride with America by Bicycle, a company who will pack luggage and set up places to sleep during the long trip across the country.

The duo started riding on June 2, and ended their ride on July 24, with their longest day on the bike covering 120 miles.

Tommy is going into his junior year in high school, studying online, and his father, Tom, teaches ski lessons at Winter Park Resort during the winter.

Completing the cross-country trek has inspired Tommy, and he commented he hopes to begin competing in road bike races next year. Eventually he’ll take his own children on a ride like he and his dad completed this year, he said.

While Tommy mentioned he is still tending to his saddle sores, he said he would complete the ride again if he ever had the opportunity.

The father and son are not new to multiple day rides, though they have never completed anything of this magnitude, Tommy said.

The hardest part of the ride for Tommy was tackling the arduous climbs over the mountain passes, including Monarch Pass in Colorado.

“I like going over the passes,” Tommy said. “It’s definitely more challenging, but on the flats, I can’t get the speed I want.”

Tommy’s favorite section of the trip was passing Lake Erie while his father enjoyed cycling the East Coast, Tommy said.

“It was a really fun and good experience that I would recommend for anybody who loves adventure,” Tommy said.
