From the vault: 100 Years ago in Grand County

Berthoud Pass Open
A bunch of boosters opened Berthoud Pass last week. It took them three days to shovel out the two miles at the top of the range. A number teams have crossed and it is passable for machines (autos). The boys had twenty men the first day and fifteen the second, The third day was mainly (horse) team work. These people deserve all kinds of credit for this work. It is no picnic to shovel snow at that altitude and the fact that practically all of these men were busy people with plenty of work of their own at home shows that we have real boosters in Grand County.
New Commissioner Appointed
Governor Carlson has appointed Mr. Edmund Becker as County Commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of W. L. Clark. The county is fortunate to have a man of Mr. Becker's standing and well known business ability in this important position. The taxpayers will have nothing to fear from his administration of the county's affairs. A meeting of representatives of Routt , Jackson and Grand counties and the State Tax Commission was held at the Court House Thursday.
Card of Appreciation
Please let us extend our heartfelt thanks to all friends and neighbors who fought so nobly Monday to save our home. We can never express our gratitude for their work in fighting the fire and saving furniture. To the kind strangers who were here from Hot Sulphur Springs, and whose names we do not know, we are deeply grateful. To the many families who have asked us to share their homes, and to those who have offered us furnished houses, no words can express our thanks. Mr. and Mrs. James Cairns and Mrs. Mary F. Lyons, Grand Lake.
