GCSAR responds to mutual aid request in Rio Blanco County
November 10, 2016
Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) was called on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to help search for the missing hunter in Rio Blanco County.
Chris Ziegler, President of Grand County Search and Rescue got the word out to his team and four teammates responded, he said.
The four Search and Rescue members left Tuesday morning at 4 a.m. to drive to Rio Blanco to help search for the man.
They got to Incident Command and got their assignment, said Ziegler.
The GCSAR members were deployed to an 8-10 mile area of rough road on ATVs. They searched their quadrant and executed their job.
Using a mutual aid radio channel, Ziegler was able to monitor his team and see what was going on in Rio Blanco County.
The Routt County Search and Rescue team also responded, said Ziegler, and send five to six members.
On Tuesday afternoon, search officials found the missing hunter, David Boelcke, 61, from Michigan. He went missing Nov. 5.
Boelcke and a hunting partner were hunting near Pagoda Lake and planned to meet for lunch that day before Boelcke failed to return.
Pagoda Lake Area is approximately 30 miles north east of Meeker in Rio Blanco County in the White River National Forest.
Hunters in the area contacted the Sky-Hi News on Wednesday wondering why helicopters were flying so low to the ground in the Pagoda Lake Area, and why so many ATVs were there.
"Compliments to the depth and quality of our people," said Ziegler.
Despite sending members to Rio Blanco County, Ziegler still had resources in Grand County if something came up.
The Grand County teammates were back home by 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
"They stepped up and did a good job. We can help peoples lives, and we do."
