Grand Lake 5K raises $60K to help cancer patients

Over $60,000 was made at the Taking Steps to End All Cancer 5K Run/Walk in Grand Lake on Sunday, Sept. 25.

This money helps cancer patients with transportation, lodging, meals, prescriptions, and a myriad of needs brought on by the disease. Businesses, groups, and individuals opened their hearts and wallets to donate to the auction, purchase auction items, sponsor signs, register for the race, and sponsor the event.

Ann Douden of Fraser won the Ribbons of Hope quilt raffle and then generously Paid It Forward by donating it back to be sold at auction which brought an additional $500.

Rachel Drewett was this year’s Survivor winner of the 5K.

Overall first place winner was Caleb Kelly, second place went to Ann Burks and third place went to Jim Murphy. Jim’s dog, Peyton, was first place dog.

The winners of the traveling trophy for the Community Service Team were from O – A Bistro in Grand Lake.

The race was started by Doris Braun-Neukom of Grand Lake, a three -ime cancer survivor and special music was provided by Acme Band’s Tracey Williams, currently fighting cancer.

The group then enjoyed a meal prepared by Bob King and his Pancho & Lefty’s staff, participated in a wine grab, purchased raffle tickets on a quilt, and attended live and silent auctions.

Mountain Family Center works to get the money raised to those in need.
