HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS — This annual small-town celebration kicks off on Friday night with a free Kids Carnival complete with games and prizes. The fun is accompanied by the always popular pie-baking contest and the silent auction. New this year is the Outlaw Salsa Contest sponsored by the Hot Sulphur Springs Chamber of Commerce. Entry forms are available online. If you’d rather eat than cook, buy a ticket for $1 and judge the entries for yourself.
On Saturday, the morning begins with a traditional Pancake breakfast sponsored by the Hot Sulphur Springs Parshall Volunteer Fire Department. Throughout the day, there are kids games, disc golf, and a free petting zoo sponsored by Sombrero Stables. Don’t forget the Fireworks Duck Race on the Colorado River. Proceeds from the sale of ducks fund our ever popular firework display.
In honor of Hot Sulphur Days, the Pioneer Village Museum will be granting free admission on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keep the history alive by attending the historic Texas Charlie Shootout at high noon.
Following the re-enactment is the parade. All businesses, organizations and individuals in Grand County are encouraged to participate. Parade entry forms are available at the Town Hall or online. Best of Show prize is $50.
Starting at 12:30 p.m., enjoy some delicious barbecue while listening to a live performance from Claddagh, a favorite local band featuring beautiful Celtic music. Meals of pulled pork, brats, hot dogs or ribs include your choice of two sides, drink and a dessert. A la cart is available as well for some items.
One of the first fireworks displays of the season rounds out Saturday’s festivities. They are accompanied by live music with The Thin Ice Band – classic rock and roll – starting at 7 p.m.
Sunday slows down for the Sulphur Stroll, an annual historical walking tour of Hot Sulphur Springs. Church services in the park with Hot Sulphur Springs Community Church follows at 10:30 a.m. Wrap up the weekend by participating in community softball on Sunday afternoon.
