Jayson Harris opened the doors to The Perk coffee shop on September 7. Harris, 23, was formally the manager of Winter Perk, which occupied the building previously. He purchased the building and started his own coffee shop. Harris became interested in the coffee business in college when he was part of a startup coffee company. At the startup company, Harris was a middleman between the coffee bean grower and the roaster, but knew he wanted to have his own shop some day. He moved to Colorado from Arkansas after graduating with a degree in finance and began searching for a way to start his own coffee shop. After a few different plans fell through, Harris had the opportunity to buy the building and start his own business. He has been very busy ever since.

Harris’ vision for The Perk is community based.

He wants his coffee shop to be a place where people come and sit down and enjoy their morning or afternoon.

“We have a drive-through, but I want it to be more than people just looking for a quick cup of coffee,” Harris said.

So far, it seems to be working. Harris said he knows the economy in Grand County is heavily dependent on tourism, but that doesn’t interfere with The Perk’s loyalty to locals.

“We want to serve the tourists and take care of the locals,” Harris said.

The interior of The Perk is in the process of getting a makeover.

Harris said he has had a lot of help with friends from Young Life and his church with remodeling the building.

The Perk currently has three part-time employees, and Harris anticipates he will need to hire more help in the winter months.

The Perk recently began serving breakfast burritos in addition to beverages, and Harris said that has helped business a lot. His future vision for the coffee shop includes showing ski movies and staying open until later in the night. The Perk recently tested out the popularity of this concept by showing The Fourth Phase, a ski movie by Red Bull, and Harris said there were so many people they eventually had to turn some away.
