Byers Canyon rock sliding warning

High winds in the county have set off several moderate rock slides in Byers Canyon this morning, said Grand County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Dan Mayer.

“While assisting one vehicle that had been hit [by a rock], we had a patrol car hit by a sizeable rock and it caused some significant damage,” Mayer stated in a press release.

“I know we’re all aware of rock slides in the canyon, but we don’t want to see someone get hurt or more of our vehicles get damaged. This specific spot today is near milepost 200 in the canyon.”

CDOT and Colorado State Patrol (CSP) have been notified, and are monitoring the situation.

Due to the motorists and Deputies nearly being hit, Grand County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning motorists not to stop near milepost 200 in Byers Canyon and to move vehicles from the area if their cars are damaged.
