Chef Evan Treadwell dies following boating accident

Local Grand County resident Evan Treadwell died Tuesday Sept. 6 following a boating accident on Granby Reservoir. Treadwell is the Executive Chef at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash.

Treadwell, 54, was boating with friends on Granby Reservoir at the time of the accident. Officials do not yet have an official cause of death but foul play is not suspected and drugs and alcohol are not considered contributing factors.

The original call for first responders came in at 3:09 p.m. Sept. 6 for a boating accident on Granby Reservoir. Grand County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Dan Mayer provided details on the accident. According to eyewitness accounts the accident occurred shortly after the boat Treadwell was riding on left the relatively calm waters of Grand Bay and headed out onto more open water on Granby Reservoir.

Eyewitnesses told investigators Treadwell was standing near the front of the boat when he lost his balance and fell out of the boat into the water. He was under the surface of the water for a period of time though exactly how long is not yet known. Those on the boat were able to maintain contact with Treadwell and began attempting to pull him out of the water. After he was pulled from the water other individuals on the boat began attempting CPR. The boat then headed for Beacon Landing Marina before breaking down in the lake.

Treadwell was then transferred to another boat and brought to shore while Grand County EMS began life saving work. County EMS transported him to Middle Park Medical Center – Granby where he was pronounced dead sometime around 4:30 p.m.

County officials are working to establish an official cause of death, and are awaiting toxicology reports. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
