Driver rescued on Berthoud Pass late Thursday
October 7, 2016
Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) was paged at 11:40 p.m., Thursday night to rescue a driver who went off the road in his car just west of the Berthoud Pass Summit on US Highway 40.
The car was found 100 yards down a steep slope adjacent to the roadway. Early season snow on the pass and the altitude contributed to the accident, according to the press release for GCSAR.
Grand County EMS and East Grand Fire personnel arrived first on the scene and worked on the adult male driver's injuries while GCSAR provided additional technical support and assistance bringing the man up the steep slope to the road.
The total mission time was about two hours.
GCSAR provided technical assistance and personnel along with the combined efforts of Grand County EMS, East Grand Fire and Grand County Sheriff deputies.
"A superb combined effort by all the agencies involved and exactly what GCSAR trains to accomplish," said Paul Robertson, Field Director, IC for Grand County Search and Rescue.
